Our Tuesday Night Drawing Group Featured in Alaska Dispatch

Maybe you have heard us talking about our Tuesday night live model sessions? Last Tuesday Loren Holmes of Alaska Dispatch visited the group. The resulting article features our is our drawing group from our model's point of view! It gives you the feel of what our group is all about. Our model Thaddeus did a great job talking about the group, and we were happy to see Upstairs Studio get the publicity. This link includes contact information for our drawing group. Please share with anyone you think might be interested.

First Friday is coming up again soon- May 4th! This month we're featuring Kirk Scott as our guest artist, also the Rodgers Park Elementary school with their handmade masks. Please come "up" to say hello and to view these creative works by both Kirk and the children of Rogers Park Elem.

"Kirk Scott has had an interest in creating art since college, when he took a variety of studio courses.  In the years since, he has continued to take courses when time and opportunity permitted.  His current area of interest is printmaking, and his work includes portraits, figures, animals, and birds.  The media represented include etching, relief printing, and lithography.  This show is the first time a range of Kirk's artwork has been presented in a public venue in Anchorage."

April First Friday

_Greetings from the Upstairs Studio

MEZ Alaskan Pottery
will be presenting all new work at the Upstairs Studio for April's First Friday. Rejuvenate your routine with a colorful handmade mug or unique butter dish. Marta has been producing her new work using a slip inlay technique to create colorful floral motifs on a crisp white background of large lidded containers. She has also produced flatware using the same colorful slips but etching away to reveal the silhouette of Alaska’s most celebrated bird, the raven. At Upstairs Studio there are also plenty of opportunities to see what other Anchorage area artists have to offer. Upstairs Studio is comprised of shared studio spaces with an adjacent Gallery/Classroom. There the artists work together to provide an affordable studio and show space in a creative and collaborative environment. MEZ Alaskan Pottery's work will be on display throughout the month, but come early on First Friday for the best selection.

We are also featuring one of the Upstairs Studio's own, Dallas Wildeve and her elaborate maps and fine works. Dallas hand sews and embellishes these breathtaking pieces- maps of actual physical places, and also of the Heart, made using Tyvek. Dallas hand frames her pieces, and finishes them by hand sanding and painting these frames to fit the piece. Such amazing and detailed work, Dallas.

We had a really great First Friday featuring our own Katie Way and an artist that used to be with the Upstairs Studio, Julie Pachin, with their show called "Reclaim It!" featuring re-purposed pallet and scrap wood that they laboriously sawed, sanded and painted to create beautiful objects with a purpose for the home. From candle holders to headboards, it is a beautiful show. These art pieces will be up until early April so stop by to see them if you missed our First Friday. Also joining us was John Hagge with his beautiful vignettes of Alaska life, rendered in his acrylic paintings.

"Work Alongside" sessions with Carol Lambert

This little painting (it's 6 x 8 inches) is what Carol Lambert was working on last Saturday, at Upstairs Studio, during her second "work alongside" session. You can come into the studio and, while you do your own work, Carol is available to give tips and comments to help you toward your goal. You can also watch her as she creates a still life painting from start to (nearly) finish. Cost is $40, in advance. The sessions are limited to 5 participants. If you would like to register, contact Carol at her email: carol@carollambertarts.com
